Alison L. Janes returned to Chicago this spring, bringing her musical talent back to the area that bred her operatic voice.

Alison recently completed the season as a member of the Utah Opera Apprentice Ensemble and has returned to hone her craft and bestow her gift of song to the greater Chicagoland area. Alison was selected through national auditions to join the ensemble and spent nine months in residency with the company. While in Utah, she performed as a soloist twice with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, which she counts among her greatest career accomplishments to date.

Before embarking to Utah, Alison also was afforded several opportunities while studying for her master's degree at DePaul University in Chicago, including a performance as Cunegonde in "Candide" with the DePaul Opera Theater (2003). She received her Masters of Music from DePaul in 2003.

In spite of the criticism and rejection that are staples of a soprano's professional career, Alison is driven to succeed by the emotional connection she feels to each performance.

"When doing a role in an opera, you can be somebody completely different. You can experience feelings and act out on things that you wouldn't in everyday life. It is a lot like theater, but I think the music makes these emotions even more powerful and deep," she said. "When I'm doing an opera, I feel like I am existing and experiencing everything on another level, even in my everyday life."
